Over the years, I have been drawn to the shapes made by shadows and the intriguing perfection or distortion of images on reflective surfaces. I’ve often wondered: Isn’t a shadow really a dark reflection of an image? Isn’t a reflected image really a very clear shadow of an image? And then there is the reflection of ones feelings and emotions and how one’s experiences are also reflected in artwork. If you look up the definition of shadow in the dictionary, one of the many definitions states: ‘a mirrored image or reflection’. Maybe shadows are reflections! Sometimes we feel shadowed by our emotions and experiences…as if they are reflected in our being, in our spirit. And this can be transferred to our art.
I do all of my own black and white photography development. It’s an art form that may be lost with digital photography but I believe that there are certain nuances to the development process that can only be obtained by hand in the dark room.
I have a lovely collection of black and white photography. Please let me know if you’d like to see more of this medium.
